sdg21 web database of sustainable settlements and neighbourhoods (since 2000)

The sdg21 web database documents 232 settlements and 49 neighbourhoods as well as 45 exemplary buildings (Σ = 326) with a total of 71,980 realised dwellings, which - apart from some historical projects - have been built under sustainable objectives in Germany and other European countries since 1980. A further 43,000 housing units are currently being built in sustainable neighbourhoods or eco-settlements. 5,579 photos, 211 photo galleries and 156 film tips illustrate the projects that meet sustainable criteria in their implementation. A news blog with 846 contributions, including 75 reports on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and 136 reports on funding and competitions, complements the project database. In each of the years 2021 and 2022, 100,000 views were counted.

The sdg21.web database or www.oekosiedlungen.de has been online since 2000 and is operated on a voluntary and non-commercial basis as a free service by greenUP Architektur & Bauberatung. The aim of the website is to collect knowledge and experience from the planning and realisation of sustainable settlements and neighbourhoods in order to provide assistance to other projects.

New ecological or sustainable settlement projects are constantly added to the list, so that the web directory should be relatively complete. The newer projects mostly use the term "sustainable housing" instead of "eco-settlements". Often it is also housing projects or building groups that implement such content. It is also noteworthy that ecological measures and technologies are often no longer explicitly named, which can be interpreted as the increasing establishment of ecological building standards. In some cases, however, this is simply not happening yet. Since 2010, neighbourhoods or settlements with less than 20 residential units have only been included if they pursue a particularly innovative concept or represent a new type.
